The addiction industry is estimated to generate $35 billion a year.
With the opioid epidemic facing our country, that figure shows no sign of slowing down. The problem is that, as with any industry, there are treatment providers looking to make a difference. And there are also treatment providers looking to make a buck.
How can the average person know the difference?
One way is to look at a rehab’s credentials. And one of the best credentials to use is certification by the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).
NAATP was formed in 1978 by industry leaders and organizations that had been at the forefront of addiction service since the 1940s. Before that happened, there was no group or organization that represented the interests of private sector addiction treatment providers, especially in the area of uniform insurance benefits.
What the Best Addiction Programs Have in Common
NAATP exists to ensure high-quality treatment that can change lives. Here are a few of the standards the organization works to ensure:
- Access to addiction treatment
- Delivery of addiction treatment
- Recognition of best service delivery practices in addiction treatment
- Recognition of ethical practices in addiction care marketing and service delivery
- Dissemination of addiction treatment information to the industry and the public
- Education and training
- Public policy advocacy
- Addiction industry unity, collaboration, and information sharing
Additionally, research shows that treatment programs that are 90 days or longer are proven to be more effective than shorter stints. It’s also important to look for a rehab that treats co-occurring conditions such as depression or anxiety.
At the end of the day, deciding to get help is always the right move. But it’s almost equally important to choose a program that’s as committed to your success as you are.
