Mental Health Disorders We Commonly Treat

Anxiety/Panic Disorders

From generalized anxiety disorder to obsessive-compulsive disorder, people often turn to alcohol and drugs to help them cope with their symptoms, resulting in suffering from both anxiety and addiction.

Symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks range from trouble concentrating, racing heart, chest pains, difficultly with breathing, and an overall feeling of loss of control. From adjusting to a new job to moving away from home, these changes can act as stressors that bring out anxiety in clients.

Depression

Depression, especially when paired with drug use, can create a vicious cycle that can make recovery challenging. Those who struggle with depression sometimes turn to drugs or alcohol to cope. Since substances like alcohol are depressants, when people drink, they actually can worsen their depression and make it more difficult to overcome the addiction.

Symptoms of depression include persistent sad or “empty” feelings, guilt, helplessness, fatigue and decreased energy, thoughts of suicide and even suicide attempts. Depression can especially occur in young adults undergoing significant life changes, like moving out of their childhood home, going to college or starting a new job.

Complex Trauma

While most complex trauma experiences occur during people’s childhood, the lingering effects can carry into adulthood and prompt adults to use drugs or alcohol as a way to cope. The common causes of trauma include physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse and profound neglect.

As a result, people may experience symptoms like anger, guilt, shame, severe fear, and the inability to form close relationships. The addition of a substance addiction only adds to the cycle of these emotions.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can occur after a life-threatening or terrifying event. Natural disasters, military combat, serious accidents, terrorist incidents and sexual assault are all common causes, but PTSD can also happen after smaller incidents.

Symptoms like frightening dreams, angry outbursts, flashbacks, distorted beliefs, loss of interest and negative or detached emotions are common with PTSD. For those suffering from PTSD and addiction, they may frequently experience attention difficulties, a poorer quality of life and even physical concerns.
