The Denver Art Museum is just one of many attractions close to The Raleigh House.

Breathtaking hikes. Top-notch museums. Exciting restaurants. The Denver area is an ideal place to rediscover the many joys of life while recovering from substance abuse. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Things to See in Denver, Colorado

The Denver Art Museum features one of the best collections of art in the country, including works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dalí. On view now through Sept. 10 is The Western: An Epic in Art and Film, which examines how the mythology of the West spread throughout the world and still endures today.

Looking to do something a little more chill? Denver’s Union Station is often referred to as “Denver’s Living Room” thanks to its superb people watching. Built in 1881 as a train station, it now doubles as a public transit hub and a Mecca for diners and shoppers. Be sure to stop by Mercantile Dining & Provision to check out chef Alex Seidel’s signature take on elevated comfort food.

The High Line Canal is a great way to get moving while seeing the city. Originally built for irrigation, today it is better known to Colorado residents as a source of recreation. A 60-mile stretch of the road has been improved for use as a recreational trail and is popular with hikers, bikers and joggers.

Arvada, Colorado Events, Hikes and More

Historic Olde Town Arvada offers a charming mix of dining, shopping and entertainment. You’ll find everything from fishing gear to cat treats and can dine on authentic Italian, Indian, Thai, Mexican and, of course, classic American. The restaurants in and near Arvada truly offer something for everyone. If you’re visiting on a Friday night in August, be sure to check out the family-friendly movies shown at dusk through the Flicks in the Square series.

The Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities is one of the nation’s largest multidisciplinary arts centers in the country. It also offers a fantastic opportunity to explore new interests through the 600 classes offered a year, including writing, dancing, acting and more. There is also a theatre series that runs year-round and art exhibitions.

Majestic View Park and Nature Center offers wildlife exhibits, as well as lots of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, including trails, prairies, wetlands and a lake. Have a green thumb and time on your hand? Consider volunteering to help maintain the park’s gardens.
