Life Before and After Addiction: Chris’ Recovery Story

Alcohol and drug use have an insidious way of sucking all the joy out of life. And when addiction is in the driver’s seat and you’re headed straight towards rock bottom, you may not see any clear path to safety. You may just want it all to end.

But no matter how dark your life has become, The Raleigh House has proven time and time again that it’s possible to beat addiction. We can help you break free from the grip of substance abuse, so you can rebuild all that addiction stole from you.

Naturally, you may be skeptical and believe (mistakenly, by the way) that you’re too far gone to get help. So, don’t just take our word for it. Watch our short video about Chris’ recovery at The Raleigh House and read his story below.

How Chris Transformed His Life After Addiction

The following story is Chris’ own testimonial about his life before treatment at The Raleigh House and what his life is like now that he’s completed rehab.

Before Treatment at The Raleigh House

There were a lot of dark times throughout my life. You know, my first rehab was when I was 16 years old. I went through 15 treatment centers or drug programs, whether it was court ordered or an intensive outpatient program.

You know, I did a lot of illegal things as far as being the “street pharmacy”. I’ve had guns pointed at me, guns pointed at my head, I’ve been robbed. So, there’s been a lot of things that have happened in the past that all boiled up to make that addiction so horrible.

And now, I’m able to put those things behind me.

How Chris Rewrote His Story at The Raleigh House

The Raleigh House is the first long-term program I had ever done. It finally felt like I was being cared for and appreciated like a family member. At the other places, it was a safe place to not use. But at The Raleigh House, it was a safe place to not use and a place that was going to get me ready for life on the outside. I could just tell that right from the get-go.

Probably the most important part of recovery was knowing that you have people that you could depend on, that really care about you, and that aren’t just there to run your insurance.

And I heard a lot of success stories about The Raleigh House, too. In the anonymous fellowship that I’m in, there are so many people who have gone through The Raleigh House that are still clean and sober. It’s kind of an anomaly, you know? To see all these people that went through the same thing you did that are still 2, 3, 4, 5 plus years sober.

It’s crazy, the things that have happened in my life because of The Raleigh House. It gets my hair standing on end. The Raleigh House gets me emotional.

I have an amazing job that I would not have if it weren’t for The Raleigh House. My parents talk to me. My sister talks to me. She lets me talk to my nephew. They call, you know? I’ve got a lot of the friends I had lost back in my life now.

My future is bright and it’s not just a money thing or a career thing. It’s being able to make a difference in others’ lives, and in the community of recovery, and for people here at The Raleigh House.

I’m just excited for life. And previous to The Raleigh House, I was not excited for life. I literally just wanted to die. I was ready for it all to just be over. And because of The Raleigh House, I have that fire back in my belly, so to speak. I’m kicking butt now and it’s a good feeling.
