Complex Trauma Therapy

The Connection Between Trauma and Addiction

The common causes of complex trauma are physical abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse and profound neglect. Although most complex trauma occurrences happen during childhood, the effects can carry over into adulthood.

Unfortunately, one of the most common effects – typically used to cope with the emotional impact caused by personal trauma – is drug abuse. However, if you or a loved one has turned to drugs or alcohol to cope with complex trauma, our treatment center can help.

Symptoms of Complex Trauma

Some symptoms you or a loved one may experience due to complex trauma are:

  • Anger, irritability, mood swings
  • Guilt, shame, self-blame
  • Feeling sad or hopeless
  • Withdrawing from others
  • Insomnia or nightmares
  • Severe fear, anxiety or depression
  • Inability to form close, satisfying relationships

If a few months have passed and you are still experiencing symptoms, you may need to seek a professional help.
