3 Tips for Success with Residential Addiction Rehab: Part 1

Committing to addiction rehab is an important step in finding your path to long-term recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. Once you decide on a program, it’s important that you set yourself up for a successful treatment experience. Here are three simple tips to keep in mind during your time in a residential addiction treatment program.

1. Don’t Leave Your Addiction Rehab Program Early

The National Institute on Drug Abuse says that achieving a good outcome from a residential drug addiction program is dependent upon receiving treatment for an adequate length of time. How long does addiction rehab take? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but research suggests that an effective addiction treatment program generally requires a minimum of 90 days.

Consequences of Leaving Addiction Rehab Early

There’s really no way of getting around it; people who leave addiction treatment early face a drastically increased risk of relapse. Why? Addiction can be thought of as a chronic disease – like diabetes or hypertension. If you don’t continue treating it, relapse is often inevitable. During your stay at a residential drug treatment center, you’ll learn important techniques for treating your addiction long into the future. People who give up before they’re supposed to may not learn these skills or how to use them effectively.

2. Work Together with Your Primary Therapist

An addiction rehab center like The Raleigh House will have an experienced clinical team that is knowledgeable in the assessment and treatment of addiction and co-occurring conditions. If you choose to enroll in our program, we’ll assign a master’s-level clinician to serve as your primary therapist. The relationship you develop with your therapist is instrumental in your success during the program and beyond. The better your relationship with your therapist, the more comfortable you’ll feel discussing life experiences, thought processes or behaviors that may have contributed to your addiction.

Your Addiction Rehab Therapists Wants to Help

We understand that it can be difficult to trust someone you just met – especially if you had reservations about going to rehab in the first place. Try to remember that your therapist is trained to help people who want to overcome addiction and live a healthier life. And, if for some reason, you just can’t seem to connect with your therapist, don’t be afraid to talk about that too! Your individual therapy sessions offer time to discuss anything that is troubling you.

3. Give the Program a Real Chance

Any residential addiction rehab program is going to have its own set of rules to follow. These rules are not here to make your life miserable or to punish you. In fact, rules are here for the exact opposite reason. At The Raleigh House, every component of our drug and alcohol treatment program was carefully planned by a team of experts who have had success with helping people recover from addiction. No matter which rehab center you ultimately select, resist the urge you may feel to fight the program.
